I am a potter working in Wiltshire in the South of England where I established my workshop in 1979.

I make useful things for the kitchen and table, and display pieces. I am also noted for my lettered work. I consider a craftsman to be someone who employs their skill, expertise and discernment to provide elegant solutions to practical problems. I hope to be worthy of the title.

2011 Laurence McGowan

I first met the respected Japanese calligrapher Yoko Takenami two years ago at Art in Action where we had both been invited to demonstrate our crafts. At the end of the event I found I had some unpainted dishes left over and I asked Yoko if she would like to inscribe them. I managed to get them home safely and fire them. The results were so encouraging that we have since embarked on an exciting new collaboration . CONTRARY TO A WIDESPREAD MISUNDERSTANDING , I AM HAPPY TO SAY THAT I HAVE NOT RETIRED. IT IS TRUE ,THAT IN MAKING TIME FOR OTHER THINGS, I NO LONGER ACCEPT ORDERS FOR PERSONALISED PIECES BUT I AM STILL POTTING DAY BY DAY AND WILL STILL BE SUPPLYING GALLERIES, ATTENDING SHOWS AND OFFERING MY WORK FOR SALE AT MY WORKSHOP AS USUAL.
